Today we learned about two very important community helpers, doctors and nurses. Doctors and nurses work as a team to help us stay healthy and feel better when we are sick. To help us learn all about doctors and nurses, Dr. Schekorra and Nurse Schekorra stopped by the center and talked to us about their jobs and how they help our community. They also brought along a fun project, making our very own "Doctors Bags," a book for us to read, and goodie bags from The Dermatology Center of Inverness. Thank you Dr. Schekorra and Nurse Schekorra for being community helpers in our neighborhood and for taking the time to visit us!
Firefighters are a community helper we see in our neighborhood everyday. They help the community, not only by fighting fires, but by cleaning up after accidents to keep other drivers safe, rescuing people trapped in vehicles or buildings, helping families make sure their homes are safe, visiting schools to teach children, and so much more. Firefighters put their lives at risk to help us, which makes them more than just community helpers, it makes them heroes! Today we had the privilege of visiting the Inverness Fire Department for a tour and to learn first hand how the Fire Department and it's Firefighters help our community. We got to sit in the driver's seat of the fire truck and explore all of its different compartments and tools, we toured the entire fire station; we even got to visit the Chief in his office, we hung out in the living quarters where on duty fire fighters spend their days, and got to see a firefighter in full gear! We all want to say a big thanks to the firefighters for taking the time to give us such an amazing tour, and for being community helpers in our neighborhood.
To continue our community helpers theme, we welcomed Deputy Tewell, Detective Viggiano, McGruff the Crime Dog, and Safety Pup from the Citrus County Sheriff's Office! Together, they taught us about the many ways the Sheriff's Office helps in our neighborhood. They also talked to us about ways to stay safe while riding our bikes, in our cars, trick-or-treating, and at home. Thank you all for being such important community helpers, for keeping us safe, and for taking the time to visit our class!
As a side note to our parents, our children see every thing we do, and have no problems telling on us! Make sure you are setting a good example for them, and always wear your seatbelt! Also, Deputy Tewell offered to supply bike helmets for any of our students who need them, please see Miss Karen for more information. We took a break from our community helpers theme today to discuss cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is an important topic in early childhood education. It is necessary to promote positive socialization among children, and a positive attitude toward one's own culture and the culture of others. One important aspect of a successful multicultural education is the inclusion of positive role models from the community, which makes it a great topic to include in the midst of visits from all our community helpers.
There are many ways we integrate multicultural activities into our lessons, such as instruments and music from around the world, dramatic play with multicultural props, and our favorite, which happens to be today's activity, a multicultural pot-luck lunch! We asked our families to make a dish representing their culture or a family recipe, and to join us for lunch. This activity was a huge success, a lot of fun for everyone, and gave us a great opportunity to learn more about our friends and families cultures. We had the opportunity to welcome two great community helpers today, Firefighter Bill and Miss Michelle. Firefighter Bill taught us some very important lessons on fire safety, and showed us some of the protective equipment firefighters use. We learned how to dial 9-1-1, and what to say; my house is on fire, the fire is in the kitchen. We learned about smoke detectors; how they sound and why every home needs at least one. We learned what to do if our clothes catch fire; stop, drop, and roll. We learned that we should crawl to exit a building that is on fire, and practiced by doing a fire drill. We also learned that we need a fire plan and to do fire drills at home; check the batteries in our smoke detectors, exit the house safely, have a designated meeting spot, and call or yell for help. After the great lesson, Miss Michelle gave our kids fire safety activity books, and a certificate of merit for learning the rules of fire safety, courtesy of Smoke Divers MC of Citrus County. Playcare is also providing all our students with a smoke detector to take home with them today, and we encourage all of our families to install them right away. The Citrus County Fire Department will even come out and install them for you, free of charge, if you are unable to do so! Thank you Firefighter Bill and Miss Michelle for being such amazing community helpers, and for taking the time to share with us! Also, don't forget that our community helpers lesson on firefighters continues next Monday with our trip to the Inverness Fire Department!
Miss Amiee, our community helper today, is a librarian with the Citrus County Library System. Librarians are a very important community helper, and can be found in a variety of places in our neighborhood; such as public libraries, school libraries and hospital libraries. Librarians help find books, teach classes, help with homework, read books, and much more. Thank you, Miss Amiee, for being a helper in our community, for teaching us about librarians, and for reading Carlo and the Really Nice Librarian to us!
During the month of September, we learn about community helpers and all the different responsibilities they have in our neighborhood. Today, our dental assistant friend, Miss Mindy, stopped by to tell us how she helps our community and teach us the proper way to brush our teeth. She also brought along goodie bags, an art project and a group game to play with us! Thank you, Miss Mindy, for being a helper in our community and taking the time to share with us!
